Expedia, Inc. Celebrates the 15th Anniversary of Expedia.com

October 25, 2011 – Expedia, Inc. the world’s largest travel company and long-time resident of the Bellevue business community, celebrated the 15th anniversary of its namesake travel brand Expedia.com on Friday with an event for local employees to commemorate the company’s most notable accomplishments.

The event, which was hosted at the nearby Meydenbauer Center, featured speakers from several of Expedia, Inc.’s travel brands, including Expedia.com, Hotels.com, and Hotwire, as well as a Q&A session between Expedia, Inc. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Chairman Barry Diller.

During the half-day session, employees gained insight into the company’s new strategic direction and received access to the brands’ latest site developments and product launches. The highlight of the day, however, came when more than 150 employees participated in a surprise flash mob sequence to close the event.

“Expedia.com is truly a company of visionaries,” said Expedia, Inc. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. “The launch of the company 15 years ago has fundamentally changed the way that people around the world dream about, plan, and book travel and share their travel experiences. We’re so proud to have been part of a business that has extended the opportunity for travel to people worldwide, and I can’t wait to see what Expedia.com is able to accomplish over the next 15 years.”

Expedia.com was originally conceived by Microsoft in 1996 as a CD-Rom travel guide. Through a series of acquisitions and changes in ownership structure, Expedia, Inc. has grown to become the largest travel company in the world – online or offline. It is parent company to multiple leading global travel brands, and operates more than 100 travel booking sites in more than 60 countries worldwide.

The company started out in a small building in East Bellevue before moving to its present-day global headquarters in Downtown Bellevue in 2008, where today more than 2,000 employees are based.

“Bellevue is delighted to celebrate Expedia’s 15th anniversary,” said Bellevue Mayor Don Davidson. “The fact that such a successful, young, high-tech Company decided to locate its corporate headquarters in Downtown Bellevue is a welcome civic commitment. Thanks, Expedia. We look forward to an ongoing partnership and to many more anniversaries to come.”
