Expedia Strengthens its Relationship with Jamaica

Kingston, Jamaica - Sept. 19, 2011- Expedia, Inc., the world's largest online travel company, and one of the most important partners for Jamaica’s hotel and travel industry, strengthened ties with Jamaica when Expedia® executives met with local Jamaica tourism authorities last week.

Expedia, Inc. was represented by Marco Tagliatti, vice president of lodging for Latin America; Demetrius Canton, director of lodging for Caribbean; Nashara Frazier, senior market manager for Jamaica, and Courtney Foste, business development manager for Expedia Media Solutions; who presented key trends in travel demand for Jamaica based on bookings from Expedia’s network of more than 100 Expedia- and Hotels.com® branded sites around the world.

“Over 1.2 million travelers used Expedia, Inc. sites around the world to book their trips to the Caribbean in the past year,” said Demetrius Canton, Expedia director of lodging for the Caribbean. “We are dedicated to working with our partners in Jamaica to grow that number in the years to come.”

The Expedia and Jamaica tourism representatives discussed opportunities for Jamaica to increase consumer interest in the destination and grow the number of bookings to Jamaica hotels and resorts.

“Revenue for Jamaica bookings was up eight percent, while average daily rates are up 12 percent. Both are encouraging signs about the opportunity for the destination,” said Canton.

Key recommendations included three key strategies:

• For Jamaica hotels to grow their package business with Expedia. 50 percent of all bookings to the Caribbean and 67 percent of bookings to Jamaica made on Expedia sites worldwide are for air-plus-hotel packages, for which travelers can select any airline, any property and any dates. Expedia package bookings have longer booking windows and longer average lengths of stay than standalone hotel bookings. Expedia package bookings to Jamaica have an average booking window of over 70 days, versus just 37 days for standalone hotel bookings. The average length of stay for package bookings is over 5.5 days, versus an average of 3.6 days for standalone hotel bookings.
• For the Jamaica Tourism Board and Jamaica hotels and resorts to work closely with the Expedia market management team, which provides valuable market insights regarding inbound travel demand from US and countries in Europe, Asia and South America, where Expedia has travel booking sites.
• For Jamaica Tourism Board to step up their marketing efforts of the destination to international travelers. Expedia operates websites in over 60 countries worldwide, with the top five countries by number of bookings to Jamaica being U.S., Canada, the U.K., Italy and Scandinavia. Targeting these travelers with online media campaigns extends visibility for Jamaica as a desirable destination, and increases demand for the destination among a wider audience of travelers.

“The efforts of Jamaica Tourism Board have resulted in a very strong brand for the destination. As the global leader in travel, Expedia is proud to join together with Jamaica as a leading destination to develop a strategy for Jamaican hotels and resorts to reach even more travelers around the world,” said Marco Tagliatti, vice president of lodging for Latin America.
