Online Travel Company Expedia Releases Data on Growth in Hotel Bookings to Ethiopia

Addis hotel community invited to e-commerce seminar on reaching international hotels

Dec. 13, 2010 – Expedia, Inc., the world's largest online travel company, shared new data today showing growth of more than 160% over the last twelve months in the number of bookings made to Ethiopia hotels on the more than 90 Expedia® and® travel sites worldwide. The majority of these bookings are coming from the U.S., the U.K., and Italy.

Expedia first began working with hotels in Ethiopia earlier this year. Since then, the number of local hotels that have signed up to work with the online travel company has increased by nearly 500%, and Expedia expects that number will continue to grow. More than 130,000 hotels around the world work with Expedia, through which they have the ability to reach the nearly 60 million travelers who visit Expedia sites each month.

“Our goal in partnering with Ethiopian hotels is to expose them to an entirely new audience of travelers, many of which they would not have been able to reach otherwise,” said Diego Lofeudo, Director of Market Management for Expedia, EMEA. “Together with our local travel partner, Travel Ethiopia, we have formed a local team to work with hotels to help them effectively offer their properties around the world online.”

U.S.-based Expedia has operations throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as in Asia-Pacific, and South America. Its team includes hundreds of hotel relationship managers and revenue management specialists based in local markets to assist hotel partners in developing online distribution strategies. Members of Expedia’s local hotel relationship team are hosting an educational e-commerce seminar at the Kaleb Hotel in Addis on Tuesday, December 14th at 9am. More than 50 members of the Ethiopia hotel community are expected to attend the event, where Expedia will present hoteliers with tips for offering their property online.
