Online Travel Company To Help Attract International Travelers to Senegal Hotels

First-ever Expedia supplier summits in Dakar and Saly to draw hundreds of local hotel managers

Nov. 16, 2010 – Expedia, Inc., the world's largest online travel company, announced today the expansion of its global operations into Senegal and six other French-speaking markets throughout Africa, including Algeria, Madagascar and Togo. The company is now offering Senegal hotels the ability to reach the nearly 60 million travelers who shop for and book travel each month on localized Expedia® and Hotels.com® travel booking sites in more than 60 countries worldwide.

Expedia is hosting two hotel summits in Senegal this week; the first in Dakar on Tuesday, November 16th at 10:00am at the Le Meridien Dakar; and the second in Saly on Thursday, November 18th at 9:30am at the Hotel Filaos. Nearly 50 members of the local hospitality industry are expected to attend the events, where for the first time Expedia will present an overview on the dozens of travel brands that make up Expedia’s business, the growth results seen by African hotels after establishing a partnership with Expedia, and the numerous marketing and merchandising tools available to hotels in the Expedia marketplace. Expedia will also speak to global and local travel trends and strategies for Senegal hotel owners and managers to maximize revenue in 2011.

“Our goal is to give hotels throughout Senegal the opportunity to grow their business and attract new customers on our international websites,” said Diego Lofeudo, director of market management for Expedia in Africa. “Together with our local travel partner in Senegal, Nouvelles Frontieres Senegal, we have established a team that brings the best mix of local market knowledge and global online travel sales to our partners in Senegal.”

Expedia already works with hotels in Morocco and Tunisia, where the number of hotel reservations made on Expedia and Hotels.com sites has grown nearly 70% in the last year. At present, only a limited number of hotels in Senegal are working with Expedia, but the company expects that number to grow significantly over the next six months as more and more local hotels learn about the benefits of being a part of Expedia’s global online travel marketplace. Today, more than 130,000 hotels are available through Expedia, which handles more hotel bookings than any other travel agency in the world. Expedia has operations throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as in Asia-Pacific, North America and South America. Its team includes hundreds of hotel relationship managers and revenue management specialists based in local markets to assist hotel partners in growing their business.
