Expedia Reports Growing Travel Demand and Bookings Growth to Brazilian Hotels

Oct. 20, 2010 – Expedia, Inc., the world's largest online travel company, today released data from its global travel booking sites showing growth in consumer demand for travel to Brazil. Travel bookings to Brazil made on Expedia® and Hotels.com® sites worldwide have grown over 70 percent in the last 12 months. At the same time, bookings made on the company’s Latin America sites for travel within the region have grown at a rate of more than 300 percent.

Each month Expedia attracts nearly 50 million visitors worldwide to its travel booking sites, which include 19 Expedia-branded sites, and more than 70 Hotels.com sites including Hoteis.com and Hoteles.com in Latin America. Hotels that partner with Expedia have their property displayed on all of these sites, reaching more travelers than any other online travel agency in the world. Expedia currently works with with more than 900 hotels in Brazil, and expects to increase that number by another 75 percent by the close of 2011.

“The level of visibility hotels in Brazil receive when they become a part of the Expedia and Hoteis.com marketplace is truly unmatched,” said Marco Tagliatti, Vice President of Market Management, Latin America, Expedia, Inc. “International travel by visitors from outside Latin America to Brazil - and especially Rio - is growing like never before. Over the course of the next decade, Rio de Janeiro will host two of the world’s largest sporting events - the 2014 World Cup and the Olympics in 2016. Demand for travel to the city will never be greater, and Expedia understands hoteliers’ desire to benefit from this influx of demand at such a crucial time.”

Expedia also revealed plans to expand its current Rio de Janeiro operations as part of a larger effort to support the growth of Brazil’s tourism market. Part of Expedia’s Latin America expansion plans includes growing the local market management team by approximately 30 percent over the next four years. Today the Expedia Latin America market management team consists of local revenue managers based in cities throughout South America, including Rio de Janeiro. The sole focus of this team is on developing relationships with local hoteliers, and counseling those partners on creating an effective distribution strategy that will maximize revenue and drive incremental travel demand using the numerous merchandising and promotional opportunities Expedia offers. Expanding this team will allow Expedia and Hoteis.com to assist an even larger number of Rio de Janeiro hotel partners interested in extending their reach to a global audience of travelers.

“Our property has benefited from the booking and exposure we generate in partnership with Expedia. Their local team in Rio provides us valuable marketing and distribution insight and has helped simplify the process of offering our hotel to a global audience of travelers,” said Amanda Abreau, Sales Manager for Mar Ipanema Hotel. “We have the valuable opportunity to be seen by millions of travelers around the world – an audience we could not have reached otherwise.”

The Expedia Latin America market management team is in Rio de Janeiro this week attending Latin America’s largest annual tourism industry event, Fair of the Americas. Earlier in the week, Expedia hosted a partner appreciation event in Copacabana and in the weeks prior, the Expedia and Hoteis.com revenue management teams hosted an educational ecommerce summit for more than 150 members of the Rio de Janeiro hotel industry community, where they presented an overview of recent online travel trends, and educated hotel partners on developing successful online sales strategies in order to achieve maximum occupancy and revenue.
