World's Largest Online Travel Company Expands Presence in Brazil

Expedia Grows its Brazilian Operations to Help Hoteliers Reach the World's Largest Audience of Travelers

RIO DE JANEIRO and BELLEVUE, Wash. – October 21, 2009 Expedia, Inc., the world's leading online travel company, which operates more than 70 Expedia® and Hotels.com® travel booking websites worldwide, announced today the expansion of its Brazil-based operations and growth figures regarding its role in the Brazilian travel market. Travel bookings to Brazil made on  Expedia and Hotels.com sites worldwide have grown 30 percent in the past 12 months. In fact, travelers across the globe have booked more than 90,000 room nights at Brazil hotels through Expedia just this year. This is encouraging news for Brazilian hoteliers, who are working hard to maintain demand and occupancy in this challenging economic environment.

“The opportunity that online travel brings for hoteliers in Brazil is very exciting,” said Marco Tagliatti, Vice President of Market Management, Latin America, Expedia, Inc. “We are expanding our team in Brazil so we can help Brazilian hoteliers grow their business by offering their properties to our millions of consumers across the globe.”

Expedia operates more than 80 travel booking websites in nearly 60 countries, including US-based Expedia.com® and Hotels.com, and 12 websites serving Latin American consumers, such as Brazil’s Hoteis.com (www.hoteis.com). Tagliatti leads a team of hotel revenue management experts located throughout Latin America, including the Expedia Market Managers in São Paulo and Rio who are focused on helping hotels in Brazil increase their profitability by offering their properties on Expedia’s websites.

“Working with Expedia has provided great benefit to our hotels by giving us exposure to international travelers visiting Brazil who may not have otherwise found us,” said Paulo Marcos, Marketing Director for Windsor Hoteis in Rio de Janeiro. “And through Expedia’s sites in Latin America, such as Hoteis.com, we can more effectively reach travelers who book travel online.”

In Brazil, hoteliers are signing up to work with Expedia in increasing numbers in order to showcase their properties to consumers around the world who book on Expedia and Hotels.com websites. Today, Expedia has over 450 hotel partners in Brazil, a 244 percent increase from twelve months ago. On a global basis, Expedia offers more than 100,000 hotels on its travel booking sites around the world. By partnering with Expedia, hotels automatically appear in the search results on any of the company’s more than 80 websites when customers search for hotels in that destination. Expedia has partnership programs for hotels of all sizes, from the small 10-room pousada in rural Bahia, to a larger 100-room hotel in the center of Brasília.
